How to Find your Unique Purpose in Life

Imagine waking up and jumping out of bed, not because you're late but because you've found your purpose in life and can't wait to get started with your day.
Finding your unique purpose and place in the world is a process. It doesn't happen overnight. Image of wooden steps through the forest.

Imagine waking up and jumping out of bed, not because you’re late but because you’ve found your unique purpose in life and can’t wait to get started with your day.

You love and truly stand behind your work so much so that you actually have trouble pulling yourself away at the end of the day.

Everything you do is in alignment with you, your truth and your goals in life.

You don’t need anything to “take your mind off things” because you’ve found your purpose in life and want to spend every extra moment working towards your vision for yourself, your family and the world.

Okay, pause.

All of that sounds great but how do you actually get there?

You’ve spent a lifetime working to get where you are and it’s heartbreaking that this is not the answer you were looking for. I know because, I’ve been there.

The biggest battle is just accepting this truth, and it’s important to realize that you weren’t wasting your time. The time spent doing this is what brought you to the point where you are now: ready to move forward in life. You fulfilled this desire, saw that it isn’t all it was cut out to be and are now 100% ready to move on and never look back.

The realization that society’s idea of the perfect life might not be the right fit for you and that deep down, you’ve always known what will make you happy is part of your spiritual awakening.

After having this realization, you are one major step closer to finding your unique purpose in life and your true, authentic self.

Once you can truly accept this, the rest will just flow.

So keep that in the back of your mind and start to manage your free time.

Don’t spend it feeling sorry for yourself and drowning your sorrows in whatever vices you may have. You and I both know that this will get you nowhere.

Move forward with optimism and the intention to make a positive change in your life.

Start to notice the things that you enjoy in life.

Do you enjoy nature? Making music? Listening to music? Do you enjoy drawing or art? What about programming, science, cooking, teaching, spending time with children?

Whatever these things may be, make notes and shamelessly spend more time doing them. Whether it’s an hour each day after work or a few hours once a week, explore your likes more.

By doing this, you will make one of the three following realizations:

  1. Hey, I don’t like this as much as I thought I would.
  2. This brings me peace of mind.
  3. This … this could be my purpose in life.

Whatever the realization may be, it will be a productive one.

Let’s look at each of these scenarios in turn.

Hey, I don’t like this as much as I thought I would.

In this case, you will be able to safely eliminate a potential future from your list. You’ll know that this is not something that adds to your life and this is the key.

This exercise is not meant to immediately give you the answers that you seek, it’s meant to continuously bring you closer to your truth and help you recognize your unique purpose in life.

Let me say right now that what you seek is not instant gratification. So if something is a little challenging but you still love it, it’s something that you should continue doing.

This brings me peace of mind.

If something like taking walks in nature brings you peace, then you’ve found a gold mine. Don’t ever let this leave your life. Set aside time to do these things and guard that time. These moments when you feel truly at peace and at home will bring you clarity and allow life to flow.

Now don’t go creating expectations and tension around this activity either. If you go out for a walk, tense with the expectation that the answers you seek will be as clear as a slap in the face, you’ll come back empty handed, and what’s more, you’ll be spoiling something so simple that brings you so much joy.

So be natural, let it flow and keep an open mind. When you’re peaceful and centred, you’re opening up doors for life to happen.

You’ll meet new people and opportunities will open themselves up to you. Literally, the path will become clear as you take the steps.

Your job at this point, is to say yes and go with the flow. It may be scary to try new things but it’s even scarier to do the same things over and over for the rest of your life.

This … this could be my purpose in life.

This is a feeling that will come to you down the road from deep within. If this thought or idea comes to you randomly and you have doubts and objections, proceed with baby steps.

When you’ve found your purpose in life, you’ll know it. It will be as clear as day. You will have no doubts, questions or concerns about it.

This is your intuition speaking to you.

Every time I have received a message from within, it’s turned out to be the right thing for me. I didn’t always understand it at first, but it became clear to me when the time was right and I was ready to receive and understand.

So my advice for you is to trust your intuition.

It has your best interests at heart.

How do you calm the mind enough to hear your intuition?

Your intuition comes from a deep layer of your existence. It goes much beyond the intellect and this is why the messages can sometimes conflict with your beliefs.

Your key to hearing that wise little voice inside, is to manage your mind. And while there are many ways to do this, what’s worked for me without even being consciously aware of what I was doing, is the practice of yoga.

My yoga practice guided me from being feeling lost, stuck and alone to feeling grounded, centred, and aligned with my truth. Without even knowing what was happening, I found my way to where I am: a grounded, spiritual teacher who, through the ancient practice of yoga, can help you find your truth and your purpose in life.
